Creating Your Own Blog - How to Start a Blog the Right Way

By now, you probably know about all the advertising and informational benefits your own blog can offer. You may be wondering how to create a blog of your own. Before you jump in with both feet, however, you should stop to consider some of the most common pitfalls new bloggers encounter. Here are a few mistakes you could make when you're wondering how to start a blog, plus a little information about how to avoid them.
A little bit of everything - With so many cool Blogger and WordPress templates, add-ons and other widgets available for your blog, it's easy to want them all. Unfortunately, by the time you put in every useful-looking plug-in and every attractive graphic, your blog has become completely unreadable. While it's understandable if you want to take advantage of all the great resources available for bloggers on the Internet, it's usually a better idea to pick your favorite two or three elements. You can add more later if the circumstances require them.
Embedded multimedia - Embedded sound, video, Flash games and other media can do a lot to draw attention to your blog. If you rely on them too heavily, however, they could actually drive people away. This is especially true for media that plays automatically, which can be loud and disturbing. Even media that's controlled by the viewer can be a problem, since it's a lot harder for search engines to categorize it. Keep the most important information in text format and use media as a special extra to add a little flavor to your site.
Lack of credit - Many blogging platforms, especially microblogging options like Twitter and Tumblr, make it very easy to repost or copy someone else's content. There's nothing wrong with this on a base level; by spreading the information across the Internet, you're helping the originator get a little better known. If you don't bother to credit the source, however, you're not just causing problems for the original content creator; you're also putting yourself in a potentially risky legal position. Play it safe; credit and always link back to the creator of a video, essay, image or anything else you use in your blog.
Poor color choices - Red text on a blue background or a really fancy font might look great on your screen, but there's a good chance it won't translate well to those of your readers. You don't have to stick to just black text on white, but there's a reason that kind of high contrast has long been the Web standard. People who have impaired eyesight or lower quality computers may have trouble reading more adventurous color combinations. If you're not sure whether your site will work well for your readership, take a screenshot and view it in black and white. Step away from the screen; if you can't read the text, it may be time for a change.

Self-Editing of Essays (for Korean English Students)

An ESL Student's Checklist for Systematic Self-Editing of Written Work (aimed at high school and university but should be used earlier).
Writing is difficult for the beginner and doubly so in a foreign language. My checklist covers the basics. This page was developed in South Korea, at Honam University, but can be adapted for writers the world over.
Korean English teachers (and the droves of instant ESL teachers) do not have the time and often do not have the skill to edit (correct and critique) their students' written work. This is a fact of life in crowded high schools, colleges and universities. Editing written work is so time consuming because the quality produced by students is often very low. A full re-write is often needed and that is not the teacher's job. The problem is being passed through the school system and goes uncorrected. Yes, class size is too large in the high schools and universities but I see the main problem being teachers who are not organizing students to self-edit their own and their classmates' work. Every class should make and boldly display the following checklist on the wall, and every student's notebook should have a copy pasted on the first page for reference. Teachers cannot expect students to guess their way through the editing process. Let's all be systematic.
1. Use spell-check or a dictionary.
2. Capitalize: names, countries, states, provinces, county, business names, 1st letter of a sentence, days, months, etc.
3. Punctuation marks: .,"!?/{[(:;
4. Plurals: leaf/leaves horse/horses this/these a/an.
5. Check sex/gender: My mother he is a hard worker.
6. Check positional (prepositions) and article words (in, on, under, at, of, to, a, an, the).
7. Tense: present, past, future (or general past with had and have). Simplify: Avoid using have and had as it is more complex.
8. Eliminate redundancy: e.g... It was a big, large, gigantic, sizable house.
9. Shorten sentences: Avoid long rambling statements; old fashion and may confuse.
10. Avoid overuse of a word. Check the thesaurus and avoid being a bore.
11. Avoid too much generality. Give specifics. Give useful data in your compositions.
Wrong: I have a brother and two sisters.
Right: I have three siblings, Jennifer 2, Cindy 5, and Bob 14 years.
12. Your composition (story/ report) must have logical flow. Check logical order (see #11 next).
13. Use paragraphs and headings. Headings will give logical order and flow. They are like an artist's sketch lines or a movie maker's story boards.
14. Avoid ambiguity (words with 2 or more meanings). Ambiguous words/expressions confuse your readers. Eg.. article means a thing and a story in a magazine.
15. Think of your readers, your audience, when you read your own work. Who will read it? Will they be confused?
16. Think of the tone or message. Is the writing meant to be funny or serious?
17. Korean grammar is quite different from English so students cannot construct common English grammatical sentences unless they read, listen to and use 2-step translations.

College Applications: How Parents Can Help

Applying to college is a lot of work - and it can be stressful. 80% of college applicants are currently trying to get done in about 4 weeks what they should have been doing for the last 8 to12 months! I see it all of the time. That's why I have some great tips to offer to parents during this stressful period.
While completing applications and meeting important deadlines is no doubt your student's responsibility, you can provide support and encouragement. Here are some ways you can help:
  • Ask how the applications are going - but don't nag! Show interest in how the applications are coming along, but don't add to the pressure your child is already feeling as they try to get things done. Keep telling yourself, it will get done on your student's timetable, not yours.
  • Don't add your worries and anxieties to your student's. Let your student get things done on his or her schedule, instead of yours. Insisting that he add colleges to his list at the last minute, "just in case", rewriting his essays for him or talking about your student with other parents can add more stress to an already stressful process. Your child needs to feel that you are confident everything will be OK - your kid will be happy and successful no matter what college he or she lands at!
  • Organization. There's lots of paperwork involved so help your student put together a method to store all of the college application materials so he or she doesn't have to spend hours just looking for something in order to spend additional hours completing it. Organization will set you free to focus on what's important - getting things done. Help him cement the organizational and time management skills needed to be successful in college - so help but don't do it for him. Don't deny your kid this important learning and growth opportunity by taking over. Offer suggestions, for example, color coded tabs and folders with labels always works great for me. Suggest a calendar on their phone with reminders set for important deadlines.
  • Offer lots of love, hugs and support while keeping comments to a minimum. This is an important experience, made easier if you focus on having a fun, exciting journey rather than an anxious one. It should be exciting because of the opportunities before you. Focus on that rather than saying all of this work is a 'burden".

Your Heroic Journey - Becoming the Creator of Your Own Life Story

I have always been attracted to the idea that one's life is a story, one in which you are both author and protagonist. What I have learned is that this perspective is more than a literary fancy. It actually provides a perspective and a set of tools that can greatly facilitate personal transformation at any stage of life, and especially so at midlife.
Let's look at this a little more closely.
First of all, if you are the author of your own life, then the narrative is always and only in your hands. You may, of course, be influenced by others, just as one author often inadvertently echoes the theme and style of another. But ultimately, the creative decisions are yours; you decide what gets in and what stays out, you decide how any particular event is to be portrayed or understood.
Second, a narrative approach to one's own life gives you the chance to re-evaluate the role played by the inevitable difficulties life entails. No author would ever attempt to write a story without conflict. Who would read it? What would keep the story going? As author of your life-story, you are free to take the position that things don't "happen to you." They are "written in" as a plot device to keep the action moving toward its final resolution.
And third, the resolution remains in your hands as well. This is as true of any episode in the unfolding story as is of the story as a whole. Aristotle said that no life can be pronounced good or bad until it has reached its end. This is because until the very last line is written, the possibility of transformation or redemption remains.
Let's say you are struggling through midlife. Perhaps you have a string of so-called "failures" behind you: perhaps a career that never got under way, or a string of failed relationships. What will you, as the consummate novelist you are, do with this material? How will your hero (that's you, remember) finally respond? Think about it. This is the stuff of great drama! No one becomes a hero without slaying a few dragons, and your life has graciously supplied all the challenges you need to now demonstrate your true heroic nature.
In fact, the moment when you feel the most thoroughly beaten down is precisely the moment of greatest dramatic and transformational potential. Here is the crisis, the point of greatest emotional tension (that's a literary definition, by the way), when your hero, propelled by narrative energy, experiences breakthrough and transformation.
Now this transformation can take many forms. So you need to ask yourself: What kind of story are you writing yourself into? A comedy, which in the classical sense means a story where the world after crisis and transformation is a happy one? Or a tragedy, where the transformed world is sad, broken but still noble and ennobling?
It's up to you...and only you. Which will you choose? But remember, where there's life, there's hope. While you're still writing, you can still write a happy ending.
Here are some books that will help you write your saga:
  • The Story of Your Life: Becoming the Author of Your Experience, by Mandy Aftel
  • The Story of Your Life, by Dan Wakefield
  • The Hero's Journey, A Guide to Literature and Life, by Reg Harris
Two other resources that have been very helpful to me and may be to you as well include the following:
  • The first is the DVD series The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Bill Moyers interviews with mythologist Joseph Campbell (or read Campbell's book by the same name if you're up for a project).
  • My final recommendation is personal and probably pretty idiosyncratic. This is J.R.R. Tolkien's essay entitled "On Faerie Tales." Not only is this the first and greatest essay on what has sadly come to be regarded as children's literature, but, in his epilogue, Tolkien makes the connection between story, happy endings and his own deeply held religious faith. This is not for everyone, but some will some will find it pure Elven healing magic.
My name is John Lord. I am a teacher and a personal coach based in New York city and Puebla, Mexico. My personal mission is to help individuals who at mid-life are looking for proven ways to achieve personal transformation and success.

Reaching the Online Home Earning Pinnacle With Essay Writing

They say that when one has the talent, then he/she should show it to the world and be proud of it. It might be the way for him/her to reach his/her goals, not to mention that it might be his/her new way to make a living. Workers nowadays are absolutely lucky because they still have a stable work to provide his/her family's basic needs, especially now that the whole world is suffering from the brunt of financial crisis.
That's why many online jobs right now have been popping out of nowhere. These home online jobs give the house people something to do to earn some bucks even without going outside of their residences.
One of these so-called home online jobs is essay writing. People who have a natural talent in writing journals, articles, or any reading material that makes sense might be interested in this kind of work.
Would this be a productive work, anyway? Definitely, it will be. Here are a few reasons why essay writing is something that will help aspiring writers or even occasional writers reach the pinnacle of their lives, not to mention that it's a way for people to make a living full-time or part-time.
Essay writing is the bloodline of most online sites. By writing these essays and articles, additional tasks might be given to those who are keeping up a site with reading materials. This might sound a bit off, but it's actually a good thing, since more money comes in for the site personnel, so they can get more of what they do for a living.
Workers who do essay writing also hone their abilities for future work. Even if this job is only done at home, there is no way for them to be unable to make good articles and widen their horizon of the knowledge realm as well. Reading and researching about a certain topic will give additional information to the writer, plus it will make the writer think creatively of how to write the article in an artsy way.
The last reason would be a mixture of the first two, but nonetheless the most endearing one. Workers develop a great sense of responsibility in them because they get to spread information to a large number of people through their creative articles. It's not only a matter of helping people earn money or giving more content for an internet site, but also it is a matter of sharing your knowledge to those people who would like to learn more about certain topics. As many people say, money comes in but quickly fades out. However, knowledge comes in an rarely gets out.
Writing articles might not be the easiest way to reach the pinnacle of earning, but nonetheless its rewards are worth more than what the biggest jobs in the world can pay. With a mixture of creativity, perseverance and a strike of luck, essay writing will only do so much not only for just the writer, but also for the whole mankind.
